Scope 1, 2 and 3 in plain language

Three emissions categories. You probably only need two.

Scope 1 — what you burn yourself

The emissions from fuel you use directly: the gas from your heating, the diesel and petrol from your own vehicle fleet.

These figures are on your energy bill and your fuel card statement. You don't need anything else.

Scope 2 — the energy you purchase

The emissions that arise elsewhere to generate your electricity or district heating.

This is also on your annual bill. If you have a green contract, that's on your electricity label and counts differently.

Scope 3 — the rest of the value chain

Everything that happens further down the chain: the production of what you buy, your employees' commuting, outsourced transport.

This is the heaviest category and it falls outside the voluntary standard. You can refuse it. If you still want to fill in something because your bank asks for it, you can do so with us — we just don't count it, because that would be false precision.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to calculate scope 3?

Not under the voluntary standard. We do offer the fields, so you can fill them in if someone explicitly asks for them.

How accurate are the scope 1 and 2 figures?

They are indicative. We convert your consumption using the official Dutch emission factors and include the source and reference date, so everyone can check where the figure comes from.
